I went to Japan for the release of a movie I did called Boondock Saints. I love Japan.
I took the top photo at a beauty contest in Sibuya, I think. The girls all seemed like they were pretty much scared to death.
His favorite photo
I call the picture of the little girl “Happy.” She was playing in the park with a lot of other kids - I think they’d just come from school because they all seemed really excited. I had to chase her for a little while to get her to let me take her picture. And when she gave in, her mother watched me like a hawk. But it’s one of my favorite photos that I’ve ever taken.
No one was hurt
On my way to this enormous toy store called Kiddieland I passed that guy on his bike (far left). I thought he looked cool, so I hung out of the window and took the shot. It was kind of a fluke - I got lucky. But when I started to take his picture, he almost crashed. I kind of went nuts in Kiddieland. I highly recommend it.
Then there were heavy sake nights. I took some pictures on my way home from a jazz bar called Golden Guy on a seedy street in Ginza. The bar was the size of a closed, owned by a “new half” which is what people there call male to female transsexuals She was very sweet. Pink hair. Cowboy hat. She’d seen me on a comedy show and asked me to sign her T-shirt. I drew a large penis and signed my name, and she gave me lots of free drinks.
None of your business
I can’t tell you about the one of the guy in the mask. Too incriminating.
Writing on the wall
Below’s a poster for a show I really wanted to ee but didn’t make it to. In fact, I took hundreds of photos of graffiti and posted fliers - they were all so good over there. I love Japan.
The studio paid for the trip, but I did drop $500 at Kiddieland.
